Exhaust system: how it works and some useful advice by Renzo Merelli
Contrary to standard automobiles, the exhaust system is a fundamental factor in guaranteeing High Performance in kart engines. Below we have presented a brief description of how this system works and how to stay at the head of the track.
Above all, it is important to explain that when we refer to the “exhaust system”, we are actually referring to the kart’s muffler. In 2-stroke engines, this becomes an extremely important part because of its influence on the kart’s performance levels.
Let’s make an example of any standard automobile. If the muffler was removed, there would definitely be a great deal of noise, but the vehicle’s performance would not be affected. This is not true, however, for 2-stroke engines, which are often those used in karts. The reason is simple. 4-stroke engines have valves that control fuel intake and output. This function does not exist in karts, and consequently the absence of the muffler would result in fuel leakage.
Muffler maintenance is fundamental, and is also a quick, easy task. Generally, it is necessary to check the springs and manifold, and to clean the inner part of the muffler that can become incrusted. The task of cleaning the muffler should not be underestimated. Here is the best way to go about it: Above all, it is necessary to heat it up in an oven or over a stove. Then strike it with a rubber mallet to loosen the incrustations inside of the muffler. Be careful, since a large amount of burnt debris will come out of the muffler. We recommend using a face mask, since one can never be too careful.
The end part of the exhaust system is the noise filter, and this part does not require any special type of maintenance. This component was introduced by Cik-Fia following the implementation of more stringent noise pollution regulations. The kart’s intake silencer has diverse measurements from the diameter of the intake conduit in accordance with federation regulations based on the different categories.
