What kind of magnetic drive pump would I need for a 120 gallon tank?
Right now I have a MAK 5 magnetic drive pump hooked up to my aquarium. It’s really old and I’m looking for anew one. What would I need for a 120 gallon tank? And what do all those terms stand for like GMP, Foot of Head and PSI. If anyone has some links to some info I would really appriciate it.
Do you mean a Gen X Mak 5 external pump? or a Mag 5 Submersible Pump??? If it is submersible a laguna pond pump is the best bet. Match the GPM to your existing pump or go bigger. If it is external, look at the sequence line of pumps.
GPM= gallons per minute
Foot head or head pressure per foot… Most pumps do not do well pumping water UP. The head pressure is how much flow the pump will loose for every foot in height the pump has to push. PSI is pounds per square inch. Some industrial pumps require push so many PSI that normal schedule 40 PVC cannot be used, 80 would be needed . These pumps do not exist in the aquarium hobby though.
If the pump is external it may make your life easier to make sure your plumbing fits. The Mak uses small plumbing and if thats the case you are looking at an Iwaki pump, or a Gen X pump. Both are good but use more electricity than the sequence pumps. If its a submersible the laguna pond pump is very flexible, it comes with all different sized adapters
