Are Man-Made Oils Better Than Mineral-Based Oils? by Robyn Ball
Companies that make blended man-made engine oils use additives that maximize protection from the wear and tear in ranges of extreme temperature. This is why they have been recommended for the high-rev gas engines to date. With the engineered oils, drivers of gas or diesel engines get a thorough internal engine clean and do not have to change crankcase oil and filters as often.
Acid forms as fuels burn. Man-made oils neutralize this acid. Acidic deposits and acidic pitting in cylinders and linings is reduced. Lubricants and the molecular structure in man-made oils extend the life of the engine by keeping moving metal surfaces apart. When there is less friction, there is less wear.
The number of oil changes is cut in half because this acid from combustion is neutralized. However, another troubling effect of acid from combustion is engine corrosion. Drivers should get an engine oil analysis almost any oil/lube shop to determine the best interval for the new synthetic oil changes for each engine. Synthetic oils are now the same weights as for light duty use. In other words, heavy-duty trucks would use a 10W-30 or 10W-40 just as with light-duty personal or company vehicles, not the old 15W-40. Heavy-duty man-mades are more than twice the price of conventional oils for heavy-duty, but this cost is justified when oil changes are extended accordingly.
Synthetic oil will thicken less in colder temperatures. At startup, truckers are no longer warming their engines. So, this important for instant and complete lubrication when the internal parts of the engine are the driest. Shortened startup time in the newer heavy-duty diesel engines mandates the use of man-made oil as engines are colder internally at startup and the synthetic blend oils flow better than conventional 15W-40 oil.
Man-made oils are also more stable at hotter temperatures allowing stronger protection under hot operating conditions. This is why so many manufacturers recommend synthetic oils for the 4-cylinder gas engines.
Also, with synthetic oil, oil pumps will use less energy to lubricate the engine because synthetic oil flows more evenly and faster through the engine. Synthetic blend 10W-30 and 10W-40 oils are suitable for all heavy-duty engines, old or new.
Another way to reduce fuel cost is to use additives in the fuel tank as well. Fuel reformulators are available that condition your fuel to raise mileage rates by twenty percent (20%).
