Swing Sets Help Children Build Motor Skills and Sense of Adventure by Jeremy Smith
In a child’s world, a swing set is a place where kids can use their imagination, muscles and sense of adventure to play outdoors. They do not realize that they are learning how to play or how to use their motor skills; they just know they are having fun. Swing sets allow children to indulge in their sense of adventure through climbing, swinging, sliding, pushing, pulling, crawling, flipping and hanging. Swing sets are also a place to learn and practice social skills with other children. These are a few of the practical ways that swing sets can help children develop their minds and bodies with outdoor play.
Motor Skills
As children play on swing sets, they develop their muscles and motor skills. Gross motor skills involve controlling large muscle groups, and include things like balance, coordination, spatial orientation and control of body movements. Sitting on a swing and moving back and forth without falling is just one of many examples of using gross motor skills. Balance skills are honed through climbing up vertical ladders or crawling across horizontal ones.
Fine motor skills involve using smaller muscles to grasp, pull and push. Children on swing sets enhance their fine motor skills in many different ways, including hanging on as they lean back, and pumping their legs to go higher and faster in the air. Children hanging on horizontal bars or climbing ropes use a tight grasping motion to avoid falling. Muscle coordination is also used to work a teeter-totter back and forth either by oneself or with a friend.
Imagination
When children play on a swing set, they can go anywhere with their sense of imagination and adventure. As they swing on swings, they may imagine flying through the sky to a far away land, pumping their legs and feet to soar higher. A climbing rope might be the imaginary vine helping them climb out of an imaginary canyon on a wild adventure with nature.
Social Skills
When several children share the swing set equipment, they also practice their social skills in learning how to share, take turns and assist each other as necessary. Children sharing swings may take turns sitting in the saddle and pushing each other. Those playing together on the teeter-totter have to coordinate their efforts of pushing and pulling as they glide back and forth. The better they work together, the higher and faster they can go.
