Windmills – When Were They Invented?
Wind mills have come a long ways since they first developed. They are now being able to be built by individuals on their own. And nowwind turbines are one of the most popular ways for alternative energy. As each year passes by wind turbines are constantly growing within their people’s interest, particularly with the new green movement. Wind turbines are distinctive by creating energy through a source that will never diminish. This is one of the many reasons why windmills are getting popular within countries. But are wind turbines a new invention or have they been around for thousands of years?
Essentially wind turbines were created first between 500-900 A.D. by the Persians for the purpose of a water pumping system. The first design of the windmill was a vertical axis. This vertical axis was developed with vertical sails designed with reeds grouped together to the central vertical shaft by horizontal struts. In 1270 A.D. the windmill was moved over to Western Europe were they created the horizontal axis wind turbine. The design was changed because they saw the structural efficiency of drag-type for the horizontal axis wind turbines was better than the vertical axis. The windmill design was then perfected to be used in various ways such as grain grinding, saw milling of timber, pumping water, and irrigation. It was in 1888 that Americans were then able to successfully create a multi-blade wind turbine design that was to produce electricity.
From this point on the design was changed more and more to be efficient in producing the highest output of electricity. From the 1970s to 1990s countries began the creation of wind farms in a way for alternative energy over fossil fuel, more than ever during the Arab oil crisis in 1973. At that point the United States government started to get involved and started to finance some of the wind energy programs as an alternative energy source. From this point on the designs of wind turbines have been perfected into producing the maximum kilowatts for the least amount of cost. Now people are able to build their own wind turbine from home.
Energy production for wind turbines is starting to be cheaper than other ways. Wind turbines are even said to be under pricing the capital costs of close to every other power plant type in the public! This is great news for home owners since they are able to now build their own home wind turbine. People are now going to be able to lessen their electricity costs and stop depending on the electric company for their electric needs.
